Iridoplasty: treatment of closed glaucoma in Turkey 2024

Argon laser iridoplasty, an increasingly popular technique, is an innovative treatment option for angle-closure glaucoma. This non-invasive procedure, often used in conjunction with other treatments, aims to lower intraocular pressure by modifying the structure of the iris. Iridoplasty offers a less invasive alternative to traditional surgery, while demonstrating significant efficacy in many cases.

Who is this procedure for?
  • Patients with angle-closure glaucoma
Alternative treatments
Intervention or treatment's duration
  • Between 10 and 20 minutes per eye

Iridoplasty for angle closure glaucoma : Prices in Turkey

In Turkey, iridoplasty is a promising medical advancement in the treatment of angle-closure glaucoma. By widening the iridocorneal angle, this laser procedure helps to reduce intraocular pressure and prevent damage to the optic nerve. Although iridoplasty is not appropriate for all patients with angle-closure glaucoma, it is a non-surgical or complementary treatment option for many people that can help preserve their vision and improve their quality of life.

If you think iridoplasty may be an option for you, don't hesitate to request a free teleconsultation with our eye specialists for a professional evaluation and recommendations tailored to your situation.

Angle-closure glaucoma: Common symptoms

The eye, a fragile organ, can fall victim to angle-closure glaucoma. This condition is characterized by a narrowing of the angle formed by the iris and cornea, preventing the drainage of intraocular fluid. The resulting pressure puts pressure on the optic nerve, causing irreversible vision loss.

Symptoms of glaucoma may be subtle at first, but can develop rapidly.

Warning signs to look for:

  • Sudden, severe eye pain.
  • Severe headaches.
  • Blurred vision and colored halos.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Appearance of rainbows around lights.
  • Loss of peripheral vision.

If you experience any of these symptoms, act quickly! Consult one of our partner ophthalmologists in Turkey immediately. Rapid diagnosis and appropriate treatment can save your vision.

Iridoplasty: Laser treatment for angle closure glaucoma

Iridoplasty is a laser procedure designed to improve aqueous humor circulation in the eye. Enlarging the angle between the iris and the cornea helps reduce intraocular pressure, which is often the cause of angle-closure glaucoma.

In Turkey, it is usually performed outpatient under local anesthesia. The ophthalmologist applies anesthetic drops before using an argon laser to create small coagulations at the periphery of the iris. These coagulations cause tissue contraction, widening the iridocorneal angle and facilitating aqueous humor outflow.

This procedure can be performed on one or both eyes, depending on the patient's needs (prevention or treatment).

Advantages of iridoplasty

Iridoplasty offers several advantages over other treatments for angle-closure glaucoma. First, it's a non-surgical procedure, which means no incisions or sutures are required, reducing the risk of infection and postoperative complications. What's more, iridoplasty is usually quick and can be performed on an outpatient basis, allowing the patient to return home the same day.

In addition, iridoplasty can be used in combination with other glaucoma treatments, such as eye drops, to enhance their effectiveness. For patients for whom traditional glaucoma surgery is risky or inappropriate, iridoplasty offers an alternative option for controlling intraocular pressure.

Limitations and precautions

Although iridoplasty is a relatively safe procedure, it may not be appropriate for all patients. People with active eye inflammation, advanced cataracts, or open-angle glaucoma are generally not candidates for this procedure. In addition, as with any medical procedure, there is a risk of complications such as infection, inflammation, or a temporary increase in intraocular pressure.

Therefore, it is imperative that patients interested in iridoplasty in Turkey consult with one of our qualified ophthalmologists for a thorough evaluation of their eye health and to determine if this procedure is appropriate for their specific case.
