Astigmatism, a common vision disorder, blurs your vision at both near and far distances. Imagine blurry images and unclear outlines, as if you were looking through a slightly crooked lens.
Fortunately, it doesn't have to be that way! Astigmatism, like myopia, hyperopia and presbyopia, can be corrected.
In fact, astigmatism correction in Turkey mainly consists of making the cornea homogeneous using lasers, to obtain sharp images on the retina.

Types of astigmatism
Astigmatism is a vision abnormality that affects the curvature of the eye's cornea or lens. This imperfect curvature prevents light rays from converging properly on the retina, resulting in blurred, distorted vision.
Two main types: regular and irregular
There are two main types of astigmatism:
- Regular astigmatism: The curvature of the cornea is more pronounced on one axis than the other, like a rugby ball. This is the most common type of astigmatism.
- Irregular astigmatism: The curvature of the cornea is irregular and can be caused by injury, surgery, or a disease such as keratoconus.
Classification by focal line position
In addition to the distinction between regular and irregular astigmatism, astigmatism can be classified according to the position of the two focal lines on the retina:
Simple astigmatism: Only one meridian is curved, the other is normal.
- Simple myopia: One meridian is myopic, and the other is normal.
- Simple hyperopia: One meridian is hyperopic, and the other is normal.
Compound astigmatism: Both meridians are astigmatic.
- Compound myopia: Both meridians are myopic.
- Mixed: One meridian is myopic, and the other is hyperopic.
- Compound hyperopic: Both meridians are hyperopic.
Causes & symptoms of astigmatism
Myopic astigmatism is a vision abnormality caused by an irregular curvature of the cornea. Instead of being perfectly spherical, the cornea has a slightly oval shape, which affects the way light is focused on the retina.
While a small amount of astigmatism is common and often naturally compensated for by our eyes, a larger amount of myopic astigmatism can cause blurred vision and troublesome symptoms.
Some of the most common symptoms of myopic astigmatism include:
- Eye fatigue.
- Burning in the eyes.
- Eye pain.
- Lachrymation.
- Headache.
- Double vision.
- Blurred vision, especially of near and distant objects.
Diagnosis of astigmatism in Turkey
In Turkey, experienced ophthalmologists use state-of-the-art diagnostic tools to accurately identify astigmatism, even in the most complex cases.
During a comprehensive eye exam, your eye doctor in Turkey will use several techniques to diagnose and measure the degree of astigmatism. These may include:
- A refraction examination: Using different lenses to determine the strength and type of vision correction needed.
- Corneal topography (photokeratoscopy): Computerized mapping of corneal curvature to identify irregularities and the type of astigmatism.
- Slit lamp examination: Detailed evaluation of the surface and interior of the eye to rule out other conditions.
Astigmatism can coexist with other refractive errors, such as myopia (nearsightedness) or hyperopia (farsightedness). In such cases, your eye doctor will prescribe a combined correction to correct both problems at the same time.
Astigmatism correction techniques in Turkey
Forget astigmatism and enjoy clear, crisp vision!
Whether you're looking for a temporary or permanent solution, our expert ophthalmologists in Turkey provide comprehensive care for astigmatism.
We offer several effective options to suit your needs and lifestyle:
Temporary correction
- Glasses: Cylindrical or toric lenses are prescribed to compensate for the irregular curvature of the cornea and improve light focusing.

The success of temporary correction depends on strict eye and contact lens hygiene. Our doctors of optometry can give you all the advice you need to keep your eyes healthy.
